How to keep a private digital dog pedigree archive

Privacy is more than keeping a spreadsheet on a laptop. A durable local archive uses structured relationships, encrypted storage, controlled exports and a backup that can actually be restored.

Structure the relationships

Store each dog once and connect parent records by stable identifiers. This prevents the pedigree from drifting when a name is corrected and lets one ancestor appear in several branches without duplication.

Encrypt the active archive

Use authenticated encryption for stored data and keep the encryption key outside the archive itself, such as in macOS Keychain. Lock the Mac account and keep the operating system current.

Make narrow exports

Export only the animals and documents required for a specific handoff. Prefer a new ZIP or folder and leave the private source archive unchanged.

Test the backup

A backup is useful only if it can be restored. Keep an encrypted copy on separate storage and periodically verify that the archive opens and retains its pedigree relationships and attachments.
